I’ve been a little lax about posting our book club picks for the last few months–so, so sorry. The summer is so hard because everyone is travelling all over, getting their kids ready for school, and enjoying the late evenings that we all don’t get together like we do the rest of the year. So hopefully, since things are calming down I’ll be sharing more of our book club outings and readings.
This month we had a great book club meeting and our book pick was “Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows” by Balli Kaur Jaswal. This book was a totally different read than most of our books that we have read. The consensus of the group was that most everyone really enjoyed it.
“Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows” main character is Nikki. She is the daughter of Indian immigrants living in London and trying her best to distance herself from the traditional Sikh community. Nikki takes a job teaching a writing class after an unexpected family situation and becomes immersed in the Punjabi community. The students in her writing class are Sikh widows, old and young, who want to learn to read and write English but become more interested in sharing tales of erotica with the rest of the class. Nikki soon learns that there is so much more to these women than their traditions and faith. Soon enough, a local group of “moral police” who call themselves the Brothers threaten to reveal what the class has really been doing, including the stories they created and the confidences they’ve shared. Nikki also becomes involved in a romance and a mystery that strengthens the relationships with her and the others from the community center.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, was entertained and loved learning a little about a culture that I mostly know nothing about. I would definitely recommend this book.
