This book was originally slated for our February book club in honor of Valentine’s Day, but we moved it due to a few scheduling conflicts. This month’s book club was great. All of us really loved the book and we dined at one of our favorite restaurants, Wine Country Bistro.
Matchmaking For Beginners– A Review
Maddie Dawson’s Matchmaking For Beginners begins as the main character, Marnie, arrives at her fiancé Noah’s family home and meets a very special, very peculiar family member, Blix. The two have an instant connection–matchmaking and seeing love and it’s potential. Blix, Noah’s great aunt, is convinced that Marnie has special gifts, but Marnie wants no part in believing her. All Marnie wants is the perfect marriage and family. She wants it so much that she doesn’t even realize that everything is falling apart all around her.
Noah decides to leave Marnie at the altar, but Marnie convinces him to go ahead with the marriage. The marriage completely falls apart on the honeymoon and Noah decides to leave the country to get his life back on track. Marnie stays in the apartment and goes just a little “nutty”. She decides to move home to Florida and quickly reconnects with an old childhood friend.
Meanwhile, Blix’s health takes a turn for the worse and she ultimately passes away. Blix leaves everything, including her Brooklyn Brownstone, to Marnie and that’s when the story really gets good. I don’t want to go deeper into the plot due to not wanting to give the story away. But this story is one not to be missed, especially if you like romance novels with a magical or mystical element. The author does a great job weaving all of the characters together with Blix and Marnie. She also paints a great picture of the main character, Marnie, who starts the novel depending on others for her identity but finds herself as well as her purpose as the story evolves.
I really enjoyed this book, as well as everyone in our group. We all really liked the characters and story and thought the book was delightful and smart. I definitely would recommend this book and can’t wait to read other Maddie Dawson books.
