Our book club this month was so much fun. We were still a somewhat small group this month thanks to illnesses and several members being out of town, but we still had a great time. The book that we chose was Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. We also chose a local casual restaurant that was amazing, The Missing Link.
The Missing Link is a local restaurant located in Shreveport’s historic downtown. Their specialty is gourmet hot dogs. I’m not usually the biggest hot dog fan, but these are no ordinary hot dogs. They have alligator and pork sausage hot dogs, crab-boiled pork sausage hot dogs, and all-beef hot dogs all topped with lots of unusual yet delicious toppings. We all decided to share a few specialty dogs–The Carb Your Enthusiasm Dog loaded with Macaroni and Cheese, the Coonass topped with Crawfish Etouffee, and the Philly Cheesesteak. We also enjoyed some delicious Rosemary Garlic Fries, Chorizo Fries, and the Bacon-Cheddar Fries. The food was decadent and absolutely amazing!
We all really loved Where the Crawdads Sing. It is a beautifully written story of resilience, love, loss, loneliness, hope, desperation, and above all, survival. It takes place along the coast of North Carolina where a young girl, Kya, also known as the “Marsh Girl” lived and survived.
Here’s what the publisher had to say about this fantastic story–
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
I definitely cannot recommend this book enough. I loved all of the characters and the heroism of Kya. I also loved the romantic and mystery aspects of the novel. The author keeps you entertained and guessing with the complexity of all the characters.
Our book club choice for February is Match Making for Beginners by Maddie Dawson.
A few other books that I’ve really enjoyed this month are–
So what are you reading? I would love to know. I’m always looking for my next favorite book.
