I think that French Toast is just the most perfect breakfast or brunch food. Usually, when I’m hosting a brunch I always make this French Toast Casserole (everyone loves it), but this time as I was hosting a special brunch in honor of my friend Mary, I decided that I wanted to make several kinds of doughnuts. Y’all I’m very serious when I say that these doughnuts are crazy good. They are the perfect brunch staple–delicious french toast flavor with a bourbon sugar topping.
French Toast Doughnuts with Bourbon Sugar
ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon bourbon
- 1/4 cup melted butter
instructions
- Preheat oven to 350℉. Spray your doughnut pan with cooking spray and use a paper towel to make sure it is coated evenly.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and baking powder.
- In another large bowl, combine the maple syrup, eggs, sugar, buttermilk, and melted butter.
- Mix the wet and dry ingredients together and stir until well combined.
- Spoon the mixture into the doughnut pan. Make sure to only fill the cavity 1/2 full. (These doughnuts will rise.)
- Bake for 10 minutes. The doughnuts will spring back when touched. Cool for 5 minutes in the pan and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Combine the sugar and bourbon in a small bowl. Stir to combine.
- Brush the cooled doughnuts with the melted butter and dip into the bourbon sugar mixture.
Enjoy!
